Timing is Everything

There’s nothing like a deadline or an event to help move things along. We make sure to clean our houses right before company comes, or take care of home repair or remodeling right before a graduation or wedding, when we know family will be stopping by. We finish long-standing work projects right before a meeting or presentation date.

Hardly a surprise, then, that the CDC updated its mask rules last Friday…since the presidential State of the Union Address to Congress is tomorrow.

Hardly a surprise, then, that the president made his nomination for the Supreme Court vacancy Friday…not only can we presume that she’ll be in the audience for the State of the Union, but the announcement was made two years to the day from when he promised that his first pick for the high court would be a black woman.

And it was hardly a surprise that the Iowa House and Senate came to agreement on the income tax reform bill last week, making sure it was passed and eligible to be signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds before she gives the Republican response to the State of the Union tomorrow. Nothing wrong with folks getting down to business since the two sides were not that far apart…but I’m guessing she’ll mention it as yet another accomplishment here in what I’ve been calling “the free state of Iowa” lately…so again, the timing was not a coincidence.

Also not a coincidence that Russia waited to invade Ukraine…and China waited to fly over Taiwan…until the Olympics were over. Or that the plans were set as Putin and Xi held a meeting, ostensibly a courtesy call tied to the Olympics, but no one fell for that innocent purpose.

So again, while there are no coincidences…there are deadlines and events. And those bear our attention.
