We’re Not On Board

I didn’t mean to talk again today about the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy, but a couple of polls had somewhat surprising findings that I thought worthy of sharing.

First, a Rasmussen Reports poll late last week indicating that 59 percent of likely U.S. voters expect President Biden to keep his campaign promise of picking a black woman for a seat on the high court. But at the same time…they don’t seem to be happy about it.

That’s according to an ABC News/Ipsos poll which came out Sunday, showing that 76 percent of Americans want Biden to consider all possible nominees for the lifetime appointment…only 23 percent want him to only consider black women, as he apparently intends to do.

As you might expect, Democrats were more in favor of Biden making an appointment with such narrow qualifications…but hardly a resounding note of approval even within his own party. Only 54 percent of Democrats think he should only consider black women…and when you consider that the poll had a margin of error of 4.9 points…it may be that even a minority of Democrats are on board.

So taken as a whole, we know what he’s going to do, and we don’t think it’s a good idea. Normally, that might lead a president to reconsider the move…but this is without question payback to a slice of the core liberal constituency, in particular South Carolina congressman James Clyburn, whose endorsement of Biden before the South Carolina primary saved his candidacy, and who is now aggressively lobbying not only for the choice to be a black female, but one from his home state.

As noted before, but it bears repeating…regardless of how well qualified this choice will be, and I am sure she will be qualified…it will be tainted by politics. And Biden has only himself to blame.
