Not Much Worse Than This
A story crossed from Texas yesterday…and I don’t know that there are enough ways to condemn the actions at issue.
A 33-year-old man entered a plea of guilty to trying to smuggle illegal aliens into Texas. That alone is not surprising, it happens unfortunately all the time these days.
But Zachary Taylor Blood was smuggling the persons into this country illegally by stuffing them into a flag-draped coffin.
Authorities say on October 26 of last year, Blood drove a gray van, modified to transport caskets, to a Border Patrol checkpoint near Falfurrias, Texas. When asked by border officials what was inside, Blood apparently said, “Dead guy, Navy guy.”
Authorities got suspicious when they noticed the coffin was in poor condition…and packing tape was used to attach the flag to the top. They found two Mexican nationals concealed in the coffin.
The two apparently paid a smuggler to get them to San Antonio.
Blood admitted to one count of trying to smuggle aliens into the country; he’ll face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to a quarter million dollars when he’s sentenced in May.
No word on what happened to the two who were in this country illegally.
To invoke the image of a dead U.S. sailor…to deface the American flag in this way…both are truly pathetic, especially given how many Americans returned home in new caskets trying to defend those very borders that have now become so porous.
Just when you think you’ve heard it all…
