A Time of Thanksgiving
You might be hearing this segment on Thanksgiving day, or perhaps the day after. Chances are regardless, you had to work extra hard to get ready for the holiday and the time off from work, meaning Wednesday was an especially stressful day. And if you traveling, more stress. Large family gatherings? Yep, even more stress.
And don’t even get me started about being together with family for a long weekend.
All of which takes us far away from the actual idea of Thanksgiving…and I’m not even talking about pilgrims, or folks who came to this continent before that.
The idea was to set aside a day of gratitude and thanks for all that we have. Not to stress out about petty grievances, or who is carving a turkey, or what bargains we can get the next day. Simply to take stock and be appropriately grateful.
Frankly, as I’m writing this, I’m having a hard time with that…because of the work stress that seems to multiply going into a holiday weekend, with a business—radio—that still operates full time. I don’t need computer schedules that are messed up due to human error…I don’t need people calling to complain about something I said on the air, when in fact they misheard it, but since they didn’t leave a phone number, I can’t call back to set it straight…and I don’t need the feeling of resentment I have because I can’t reach anyone because they all took multiple days off this week and I’m here working.
But maybe by the time you are hearing this, things have calmed a bit, and I will be able to take my own advice and assess how truly fortunate and grateful I am for so much. These are difficult times in so many ways…but we need to put it all into proper context and yes, give thanks because we are alive and living in the greatest nation God ever blessed.
