Lack of Approval
Popularity always ebbs and flows for a politician. But there’s been a dramatic shift in terms of President Biden’s popularity both here in Iowa and nationally of late.
It started well, with Gallup showing Biden’s approval rating at 57 percent early on, not bad given how divided the country is. But now, eight months into the job, the new poll taken earlier this month shows a six point drop, with only 43 percent now approving of Biden’s job in office…and for the first time, a majority disapprove, 53 percent.
The poll was taken just after the disastrous withdrawal in Afghanistan and his declaration that businesses should mandate COVID shots for workers.
In a key finding, nationally independent’s approval of Biden has cratered…it was 55 percent in June, but now, only 37 percent of no-party voters approve.
Even worse for Biden here in Iowa, with the latest poll showing just 31 percent of us here approve, and a huge 62 percent disapprove of Biden’s job as president. Those in charge say it’s the lowest job approval rating in Iowa ever measured, below both Donald Trump and Barack Obama.
So when the president says he wants something…or tries to cajole governors or lawmakers to do something…those numbers give them even more reason to say “thanks but no thanks”…because he can’t realistically claim the public is behind him.
