IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A federal judge is ordering a prominent participant in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol to return to jail, saying he violated his pretrial release conditions by accessing the internet to watch false conspiracies about the election. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly said that Doug Jensen of Des Moines, Iowa, violated the strict conditions that were set when he released Jensen from jail on July 13. Those conditions include prohibitions on accessing the internet or using a cellphone. Prosecutors had moved to revoke Jensen’s pretrial release on Aug. 19, days after a federal officer found Jensen in his garage using an iPhone to watch news from Rumble, a streaming platform popular with conservatives.

MARTELLE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified a man fatally shot by police in rural eastern Iowa. The Iowa Department of Public Safety says 45-year-old Jeremy Michael Berg, of Elkport, died Tuesday night after at least five law enforcement officers fired their guns at him as Berg held a knife. Officials have said law enforcement converged on a property about a mile southeast of Martelle following a 911 call, and arriving officers came upon a large burning building and Berg holding a knife. Officials say officers opened fire when Berg did not comply with orders to drop the knife. Berg was shot numerous times and died at the scene. Two Jones County Sheriff’s deputies and three Anamosa police officers have been placed on administrative leave.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Sixty Iowa legislators are asking the Iowa Supreme Court to overturn a 2018 ruling that declared abortion a fundamental right under the Iowa Constitution. Lawyers filed the brief Monday on behalf of 22 Senators and 38 House members. It was filed in the case in which Planned Parenthood of the Heartland sued Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds after she signed a 2020 law that required a 24-hour waiting period before a pregnant woman could get an abortion. A judge struck down the law in June saying it was unconstitutional, citing the 2018 Iowa court ruling that abolished a 72-hour waiting period for abortion. Reynolds appealed. The court has not set a date for arguments in the appeal.
