Planning for the Future?
We get a lot of emails from various interest groups and politicians, so in one respect it’s not a surprise to see a couple of new senders filling our in box lately. But in another…well, it makes you wonder.
When he was running for president in 2019, we used to get quite regular email news releases from the Cory Booker campaign. His press person used to work for the Iowa Democrats, so we were acquainted. But then he dropped out before the Iowa Caucuses, and that stopped the emails.
All of a sudden, we’re getting daily emails from Senator Cory Booker’s office…always glad to get information, but while we do have a coast-to-coast national signal, I doubt we’re really big in his home state of New Jersey.
I dismissed it as an email list merge gone bad…but around the same time a few weeks ago, we started getting regular emails from South Dakota senator John Thune. That is a neighboring state, so that may have to do with why we’re now hearing about the GOP senator up for re-election next year.
But we’ve talked about it around here, and our crystal ball says New Jersey’s Booker and South Dakota’s Thune are cultivating Iowa media outlets because they both have 2024 national aspirations. Booker, in the event Joe Biden does not run…and Thune, either as an alternative to Donald Trump, or to fill a moderate void if Trump does not run.
Sometimes you read tea leaves like that. Similarly, we’ve noticed that Waterloo Mayor Quentin Hart has changed his Twitter handle from being just his name…to now being his name with IA after it. Perhaps he has broader aspirations than just winning re-election as mayor this year?
