Words Mean Things

Just because you keep saying something doesn’t make it true. We might think that, since talking points are repeated so frequently by partisan groups that the sheer volume of it may seem authoritative…but lots of people saying the same thing may be nothing more than a disinformation campaign.

The latest was the attempt by those on the left to brand the Family Leader organization as a hate group. Apparently they are a ‘hate group’ because they have different views from those hurling the description.

Talk about lack of tolerance by those who…ironically…claim to be so tolerant.

The Iowa Democratic Party issued a news release Friday, after 1,200 attending the Family Leader Summit in Des Moines, saying it was “shameful”…their words…“for Governor Reynolds and Iowa Republicans to support a group that promotes a hateful agenda and discriminates against LGBTQ+ Iowans”. The statement attributed to state party chair Ross Wilburn.

Naturally, they no evidence beyond saying words like “hateful” and “discriminates”…but neither did Progress Iowa in their pointed news release the day before.

They called the Family Leader “an extreme conservative organization”—is there any other kind, in their view? They also said the Family Leader was associated with a group that was “recognized by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-LBGT hate group”.

Sounds like the real hate groups are the ones calling names. And it means we all have to go well beyond the name-calling…far easier to use a phrase like “hate group” than to actually identify specifics to back it up.
