Not Their Fault
Iowa Democrats held their annual hall of fame dinner virtually earlier this month. The guest speaker was Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who became a household name in the wake of violence in her city last summer. She announced in May she was not seeking re-election this year, saying the last three years were not what she scripted for her city…a major cyberattack on city computers, a federal corruption probe into her predecessor…a pandemic, social justice movement, and in her words then, “a madman in the White House”.
Now the mayor, who was thought to be on the fast-track for higher office, has doubled down against Republicans, saying her city is now besieged by crime because Republicans ended Georgia’s COVID-19 restrictions too soon.
Apparently since Georgia opened up before other states last year, people traveled there to party. That’s what she told MSNBC last Friday. The increase in violent crime certainly had nothing to do with her interference with her own police department, demonizing the officers publicly, or supporting anti-police forces. No, instead it was Republicans removing restrictions.
That was the voice Iowa’s democrats chose to lead their major summer 2021 event.
Then there’s this…Democrat U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is a member of a whites-only beach club. When asked about it recently, he dismissed any concerns, noting “it’s a long tradition in Rhode Island”. It came up during his first successful Senate campaign in 2006, and he promised to end his membership. Instead, he consolidated his ownership with his wife’s…and therefore remained a member.
Hypocrisy is rampant regardless of party affiliation. And it’s easy to simply brush it off because it’s so rampant. But we can’t do that, because then we acquiesce and make it acceptable.
