Proper Holidays
As President Biden returns from his European trip, he’ll find a new bill sitting on his desk…it was passed unanimously by the U.S. Senate, and with only 14 “no” votes in the U.S. House. The bill would declare June 19th each year as a national holiday, Juneteenth National Independence Day, marking the end of slavery in the U.S.
Actually, that would have been when President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862…but those recalcitrant southern states didn’t all get the memo, so June 19, 1865 is noted as when the order took effect in Texas…not actually the last state to end slavery.
Regardless, those revising history have declared June 19th as the day to commemorate, and so it will likely be.
Earlier this week, I noted that Flag Day is not a national holiday…it’s a day when we honor our national symbol, but that apparently doesn’t warrant a national holiday. Marking the end of a terrible practice, a bad part of our history, however, does.
So if this gets signed right away, as it no doubt will, does that mean this Saturday is a holiday? And if so, do we get Monday off? That will happen with Independence Day this year; it falls on a Sunday, so we all take Monday off.
Have a holiday, don’t have a holiday…not sure it matters much. But it’s the way the woke folk are getting it done that is of concern. For example, CNN.com made more of listing the names of the 14 House members who voted against the bill…than they did talking about the bill itself. Likely because all 14 were Republicans.
A rush to take action in an effort to appease certain groups often leads to regrets. Perhaps so here.
