Investigators have identified a postal employee accused of shooting inside a United States Post office in Des Moines. Jennifer Pledger is accused of shooting two of her coworkers. A third employee was hurt while running away. Pledger now faces several charges including two counts of attempted murder. Investigators say Pledger opened fire into a group of fellow employees. Police say she shot one of the victims causing her to fall to the floor. She then approached that victim, stood over her, and fired again. Police say Pledger then fired in the direction of the other employees as they ran away. Des Moines Police are expected to release more information today about the victims and the motive.
The Lansing Bridge over the Mississippi River between Iowa and Wisconsin is to re-open today. Crews closed the old bridge and demolished it last year, leaving drivers to use a car ferry or a detour. The bridge was originally set to reopen next spring. But project staff credit the early opening to work done by the contracting team and favorable weather.
An infant in Wisconsin has died after contracting measles. It’s the state’s first death from the disease in more than 35 years. We don’t know exactly how old the baby was, but we know the child was under a year old and lived in Southwestern Wisconsin. Children don’t typically receive their first measles vaccine until they are at least a year old. Wisconsin is dealing with an outbreak in the Southwest part of the state, including one county bordering Iowa.
As we head into winter, the Iowa State Fire Marshal is reminding residents of precautions they can take to protect themselves and their families from carbon monoxide poisoning. Governor Reynolds proclaimed November as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month. State Fire Marshal Dan Wood is asking people to check the carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas, never operate generators indoors or in garages, and never idle vehicles in garages. Carbon monoxide can accumulate even when the garage door is open.
