With turbulent cattle markets due to beef imports and the southern border with Mexico reopening for cattle imports cattle producers have a lot to think about when making decisions for the future of the herd.
Will cattle ranchers and farmers make plans for starting the rebuilding process for the remainder of 2026 and going into 2027?
That is USDA Chief Economist Justin Benevidez. He says that price data will influence the choices of producers at the individual and national level when making heifer retention decisions.
Benevidez says that compared to twenty-year averages on returns for producers, producers have been waiting for a considerable time for the prices they have enjoyed recently.
Benevidez also says that restructuring in the packing and processing sector could play a factor in beef prices for the remainder of the year.
