Iowa is putting an agricultural spin on the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. Rather than centering its signature event around Independence Day, state leaders have planned an America 250 Harvest Festival this October to recognize Iowa’s agricultural heritage and its contributions to the nation. Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig, who serves as vice chair of the Iowa America 250 Commission, says the harvest theme was a natural fit for the state.
Naig says organizers intentionally scheduled the Harvest Festival during October instead of the summer. He says the timing allows communities to continue celebrating their own Fourth of July traditions while giving Iowa a unique way to close out the year-long America 250 observance.
The America 250 Harvest Festival will be held on the Iowa Capitol grounds in Des Moines. The free, family-friendly event will highlight Iowa agriculture, recognize veterans, and celebrate several milestones, including Iowa’s 180th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the Century Farm Program. Naig says the goal is to create a one-of-a-kind event that celebrates Iowa’s role in the American story while bringing people together during harvest season.
