WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) – The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office and Waterloo Police Department are investigating after an off-duty deputy accidentally fired a personal rifle when cleaning it in his apartment on Saturday. According to Waterloo police, officers initially responded to an apartment on West Hills Lane for a possible shot fired. There they found a single round traveled through his apartment into a neighboring unit. No one was hurt in the incident, and Waterloo police seized the gun. Both the Waterloo Police Department and Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident. The case will then be forwarded to the Black Hawk County Attorney’s Office who will review the incident and determine whether criminal charges are applicable.
MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – The Marion father found not guilty by reason of insanity for strangling his young son to death, will remain at a mental health facility. A judge is ordering Matthew Schleier to remain at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute after the court found Schleier remains mentally ill and is currently a danger to himself and others. A judge in April found Schleier not guilty of first degree murder in the 2024 killing of his five-year-old son by reason of insanity, He was committed to the Cherokee Mental Health Institute. During a hearing in Linn County on July 1, Dr. Ronald Berges, president of the medical staff at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute, testified that Schleier has made progress but should remain hospitalized for continued treatment. The chief medical officer at Cherokee Mental Health Institute must file a written status report within 60 days stating Schleier’s diagnosis and where he remains mentally ill or dangerous.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The relatives of an 18-year-old killed in a shooting on Saturday are now back in jail after their pretrial release was revoked. Cameron and Kristophe Rushing are listed in what the courts call a “pretrial report of violation” as cousins of LaRell Rushing, who died on Saturday. Both are under GPS-monitored supervision for a prior case and had reportedly failed to charge their monitors more than 80 times since they were given pretrial release. Both were booked back at the jail due to repeated monitoring violations, according to court records. They are not facing any new criminal charges. The shooting Saturday happened around 6 p.m. at a parking lot in the 600-block of 2nd Avenue SW in Cedar Rapids. Officers allege Gerald Vance, 16, of Cedar Rapids, shot at LaRell Rushing more than 20 times. According to a report filed Tuesday, Cameron’s monitor was dead at the time of his cousin’s murder. In another violation report, also from Tuesday, the parole officer says Kristophe’s monitor was not on from 5:52 a.m. to 3:01 p.m. on Sunday. The report continues, “It is concerning his battery was dead for over 9 hours after an incident of this significance took place.” The shooting was the first of two shootings Saturday, with their parole officer in one of the reports calling the second a “retaliatory shooting.” Police say a man suffered non-life-threatening injuries around 8:45 p.m. near the intersection of 10th Street and 10th Avenue SW. Cameron, Kristophe and LaRell Rushing are all listed as co-defendants in a shots-fired incident in Cedar Rapids last August. This is the same case Cameron and Kristophe were being held on pretrial supervision.
INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (KCRG) – More than three dozen employees will be let go in August from Independence Premium Foods in Independence, according to a listing on Iowa WARN. According to the listing, 41 employees were notified July 10 that their last day will be August 9. Independence Premium Foods purchased the former Blue Buffalo plant from General Mills in 2023, the same year General Mills had planned to close the facility.
