The teenager charged with shooting five people in the Iowa City pedestrian mall will be tried in adult court. Damarian Jones tried to have his case moved to juvenile court. But a judge ruled there was no good cause for moving the case out of adult court. Jones was 17 when police say he picked up a gun during a large fight and fired it six times. He’s since turned 18. He’s charged with five counts of attempted murder.
A Lone Tree man is accused of killing his father. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says 76-year-old Richard Powers was found dead in a home on West Elm Street Monday night. His son, 52-year-old Scott Powers, is charged with his murder. According to a criminal complaint, Scott Powers showed up to a home covered in blood and said, “I killed Dad.”
Three priests with the Archdiocese of Dubuque are waiting for their visas to be renewed. Fathers Emmanuel Fenelus and Jangill Maime from Haiti have two weeks left on their religious worker visas, after applying for renewal 12 months ago. Deacon John Robbins says this comes after the visa of Father Stephen Audu from Nigeria expired in February after applying for renewal. Robbins says all three did nothing wrong and deserve to continue working in the archdiocese. Fathers Emmanuel in Hiawatha and Jangill in Marshalltown have worked for the Archdiocese for more than three years.
Four immigrants employed to construct the QTS data center in Cedar Rapids say they were detained without cause by ICE agents. The migrant advocacy group Escucha Mi Voz Iowa says the men were headed to the data center work site when they were “boxed-in” by agents in unmarked vehicles. They were then reportedly taken to the ICE office in Cedar Rapids before being taken to the Linn County Jail. Escucha Mi Voz says none of the men have criminal records.
The intestinal illness cyclospora has sicken 7,000 people across the nation, including outbreaks in Michigan, but has not caused any unusual outbreaks in Iowa. According to Iowa Health and Human Services, there have been 57 cases so far this year. This is on par with this time last year, when there were 49 cases. About half of the cases are linked to international travelers. HHS says no Iowa case has been tied to the national outbreak nor a specific food source.
