U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will join Gov. Kim Reynolds today for the signing of the state’s new “Make America Healthy Again” bill into law. The bill brings changes to school lunch programs, restricts on-screen time, creates guidelines for physical activity, and requires nutritional training for medical professionals.
A former gymnastics coach who used to work at Chow’s Gymnastics in West Des Moines has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges. Sean Gardner pleaded guilty to three counts of production of child sexual abuse material. According to court documents, he used his coaching position to record minors changing clothes and using the bathroom. The FBI believes he targeted athletes at Chow’s from 2018 to 2022. Gardner’s sentencing is set for October, and he faces a maximum of 90 years in prison.
The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office says a Lansing man faces several charges including attempted murder of a peace officer after firing at a deputy during a high-speed chase. Police say Andrew Weber took off in a vehicle as they arrived at a Lansing home on a report of an assault. A deputy chased and tried to stop the vehicle. Deputies say Weber then fired at the deputy before the deputy returned fire. He escaped again, with deputies searching for hours but not finding him. A family member brought Weber to the Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested and now faces several other charges including kidnapping, domestic abuse, assault and eluding.
Joe Messerich will be the new face of public safety in Dubuque, now slated to become the city’s next police chief. He will take over when Police Chief Jeremy Jensen retires in August. Messerich started as a Dubuque patrol officer at 19. He received official approval from Dubuque’s City Council Monday night. He says he plans to focus on staffing with an emphasis on retaining officers, as the department is about 10 officers shy of full strength.
It’s an interesting sight to see–Goats are grazing all week near Old MacDonald’s Farm in Bever Park. The president of the Bever Park Neighborhood Association says the goats are being used to cut down on invasive species in the Park.
