FAIRBANK, Iowa (KCRG) – The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says a man was arrested after wrecking into a Fairbank building and fleeing the scene. Among other charges, 18-year-old Brodie Herriage of West Union is was arrested for OWI and driving with a suspended license. The Sheriff’s Office was called around 3 a.m. Saturday morning because of a vehicle knocking down a light pole and wrecking into a building on Fairbank’s main street. Nobody was with the vehicle when police arrived. After a brief investigation, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says Herriage was found around 4:30 where he was then arrested. IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – University of Iowa student and staff were asked to avoid the University Capital Centre as a small fire broke out inside the building. The first Hawk Alert was sent around 9:30 p.m. as the building was evacuated. In about 15 minutes the situation was deemed under control. The University credits the Iowa City Fire Department for extinguishing the blaze. There have been no reports of any injuries in this fire. The Centre is inside the Capital Mall which is home to several businesses.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa Board of Regents has approved a tuition increase at the University of Iowa. The University says these costs are going up because of inflation. Base rate increases of several hundred dollars will be going into effect in the Fall semester for all students: Undergrad, resident: $287 increase; Undergrad, nonresident: $475 increase; Grad, resident: $360 increase; and Grad, nonresident: $446 increase. Students are also asked for an additional fee for “technology, health and mental health services, student activities, modernizing student spaces, and recreation.” This fee includes $62 for undergrads and $55 for grad students. Other percentage-based tuition increases were approved for several individual programs including a 1.9% increase for nonresidents in the Carver College of Medicine’s MD program and a 4.5% increase for newly enrolled in the College of Dentistry DDS program. The University argues it is still one of the more affordable options for major universities in the Midwest.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Cedar Rapids Police have confirmed one person was arrested after a late night chase that ended in downtown. Police say Daniel Fields was arrested after the chase and is now facing eluding and theft charges. He is also facing charges across the state. A FLOCK camera spotted a stolen vehicle around 1st Avenue and 12th Street SE around 10:30 Friday night. CRPD’s Watch Command says the vehicle drove off before coming to a stop around 1st Street and 5th Avenue.
