Police have yet to announce if they’ve made an arrest in connection to a shooting that hurt five people at Iowa City’s Ped Mall during the weekend. Police officers haven’t said if they’ve identified the man whose photo they released, calling him a person of interest. Three of the shooting victims are University of Iowa students. But we still don’t know many details about the investigation and victims. Yesterday, Iowa City police were seen in a Cedar Rapids neighborhood near Kirkwood Community College executing a search warrant. It’s not clear if that has any link to the shooting. Iowa City police did say one person remains hospitalized in critical condition.

 

Filling up your tank could cost more under an Iowa Senate property tax bill. The bill includes a provision that increases the state’s fuel tax every year. Yesterday, was supposed to be the last day of the legislative session,  and a key piece of the property tax debate involves your gas tank. Iowa’s current gas tax is 30 cents per gallon. Under this provision, it would rise automatically each year, tied to inflation.

 

New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows Iowa’s population grew for the third straight year. The Census Bureau says Iowa added about 8,000 new residents in 2025. However the Common Sense Institute says net births dropped by about 500. The report says there were more births than deaths, but the lines are getting closer. And people aren’t moving to the state in large numbers. Iowa finished 11th out of 12 Midwest states for overall net migration.

 

A group of 88 Eastern Iowa veterans took the trip of a lifetime to Washington, D.C. The 58th Eastern Iowa Honor Flight gave the veterans an opportunity to visit the nation’s capitol and see dozens of memorials built in their honor. The group includes 75 Vietnam veterans, 7 Korea War veterans and six from other conflicts. This is the first Eastern Iowa Honor Flight of 2026, with more flights scheduled through October.
