All in-person visits are indefinitely suspended at the Anamosa State Penitentiary. The Iowa Department of Corrections says the suspension is due to ongoing safety and security concerns, but it did not provide any other details of those concerns. Video visits are still available for visitors. The suspension is in effect until further notice.
The Linn County Sheriff’s office says a man was found dead after a crash at Highway 30 and Highway 13. The sheriff says responders found a car in a ditch at around 9 yesterday morning. Crews also found the man dead at the scene. The sheriff believes the driver of the car failed to negotiate the exit. His name has not been released. The crash is under investigation.
More child care workers in Iowa will get their care for their own children covered by the state. Governor Kim Reynolds signed the bill into law yesterday making a 2023 pilot program permanent. It provided subsidies for care to child care workers below 160 percent of the federal poverty level. For a family of four, that’s about $50,000 per year. Child-care workers will now permanently qualify for the subsidies regardless of income, as long as they work 32 hours a week. The law takes effect July 1.
Transamerica says transitions inside the company will result in the layoffs of up to 25 employees in Iowa. Transamerica is a life insurance and financial services company with a location in Cedar Rapids. The company says it made the cuts as it is transitions to a new retirement operations model. Transamerica said its Cedar Rapids location remains its largest office and a key hiring hub.
Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control says over the next few weeks it expects to see an increase in animals entering its shelter. It is sponsoring a special $25 adoption promotion through this weekend in celebration of National Pet Day. Animal Control says it has a variety of dogs and cats currently available for adoption, all of which are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ready for placement.
