Top Issues
Scott Rasmussen recently conducted a national poll of registered voters for Napolitan News on what issues folks thought were most important going into the midterm elections.
The poll was taken prior to the recent military action in Iran.
Among Republicans, the top three issues of importance were the Economy, Immigration, and National Security. But the list is quite different for Democrats; their top three issues were Economy, Healthcare, and Inflation.
If you are a GOP office holder, it seems you’re going to want to address the economy in an easy-to-express, meaningful way; not only is it the top issue of partisans on both sides, but arguably, all three of the top issues for Democrats touch on it…the economy generally, the cost of healthcare, and inflation—all top issues for Democrats, all interconnected.
The Scott Rasmussen poll shows there’s an opportunity there, should Republicans get their messaging straight and their collective act together. Rasmussen notes that on the issue they care about the most, 43% trust Republicans more to handle it, compared with just 37% that trust Democrats.
So Republicans start with incumbency and its supposed advantage, the public trusts them more to handle the top issue, and by taking on the top issue of the economy, they touch voters on all sides with further advantage of big-footing all of the top Democrat issues. If the GOP then keeps its base satisfied with making strides on immigration and related national security, it’s a good blueprint for November.
I have no confidence they’ll do that, based on Congress’ performance last year and this so far. But the opportunity is there for the taking.
