CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Cedar Rapids School District held a school board meeting Monday night to discuss overall budget cuts and an updated consolidation timeline. The board delayed approval of any changes until a meeting in April, meaning no school consolidations will take place until fall 2027. The revised timeline will allow more time for community input and to better understand the impact on students.
CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG) – Coralville Police have identified the victim in Friday’s fatal stabbing as the suspect’s spouse.The woman, 41-year-old Amber Nicole Martin, from Coralville, was pronounced dead at the scene around 6:40 a.m. in the 2800 block of Spring Rose Circle.Police arrested James Martin, 47, of Coralville, on Friday.In Martin’s criminal complaint, officers say he planned the killing hours before eventually stabbing her with a kitchen knife in a surprise attack.Investigators say Martin admitted to killing the woman.Martin is charged with first-degree murder.
SHELLSBURG, Iowa (KCRG) – Benton County first responders put out a small residential fire in Shellsburg Monday morning.Shellsburg Fire was dispatched around 5:04 a.m. to the 700 block of Main Street.The fire was contained to a small area of the home, according to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.The extent of the damage was unclear.Two people were treated and released for smoke inhalation.
DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds issued a proclamation to ease restrictions for transportation of and access to fuel used for heat during extreme cold weather. The proclamation took effect January 15 and continues through January 29 at 11:59 p.m., according to the governor’s office. The order allows crews and drivers delivering propane, diesel, natural gas and other heating fuels to work longer hours than normally permitted under Iowa law. It applies to deliveries for residential, agricultural and commercial heating purposes.
