FAIRFAX, Iowa (KCRG) – The city of Fairfax is now without one of its top employees following a city council meeting on Thursday night, resulting in immediate operational disruptions, including unpaid volunteer firefighters. The council voted 3-2 against reappointing City Clerk Cynthia Stimson to her position, ending her tenure of more than a decade. The City Clerk position in Fairfax is a two-year term appointed position. Fairfax City Hall was open on Friday, but Stimson was no longer in her role. The impacts were immediately felt as the city was unable to process payroll for the fire department. Councilman Mike Daly Daly said the removal leaves the city in a vulnerable position and could be in violation of state code. Mayor Jo Ann Beer said the council did not vote to remove Stimson from her role but rather chose not to reappoint her to the position. She said this exempts the board from having to give a reason. Stimson was responsible for leading audits, budgeting, and payroll. The three council members who voted against reappointing the city clerk are new to the Fairfax council. Their predecessors had voted to retain her. The city will hold its next council meeting on Tuesday.
