The Day After Christmas

Some of you today will be rushing to stores, to take advantage of post-Christmas sales. Others will be taking back presents that didn’t fit or that you didn’t want.

Some of you are back to work today, back to the normal routine—but finding it hard to get meaningful work done since it’s a Friday, and since so many folks took this whole week off and aren’t around.

My guess is that many of you unplugged from the normal diet of news and politics the last day or two. At least I hope you did. A steady, all-consuming diet of this stuff can wear on you. And if you did, in fact, unplug and felt better during that time—avoiding breathless fake breaking news alerts, animated social media emojis, and the like—maybe that’s a sign…a sign that you might do better living your life instead of hearing others tell you about life.

Don’t get me wrong, I think everyone should be well informed in what’s going on in the world at a variety of levels. Sometimes these days, though, we take it a little too far and get so caught up in what people supposedly “in the know” tell us about something, we forget to independently think for ourselves.

If you believe most of the media slant, the country and the world are going to hell in a handbasket. But I’m guessing it’s not that bad in your life, which is where it counts.

So if laying off the second and third helping of “informed commentary” is what it takes to get your mind on track…you should do it. If you felt better the last few days for not being consumed by opinionated voices, then maybe lay off a bit.

Like dieting to lose weight…it makes you appreciate the food you do eat more. Same thing here…consuming less of the noise and being more discriminating might help you in a variety of ways.

Not trying to bite the hand that feeds me…just wanting us all to enter the new year with new focus and feeling. Because the way we’ve been going leaves something to be desired.
