IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The University of Iowa has agreed to take on part of the State Historical Society’s collection as the organization prepares to close its Centennial Building, but some historians say the arrangement falls short of preserving public access to Iowa’s historical records. Mary Bennett, who worked at the state historical society for nearly 50 years, said the agreement is inadequate. “This is them trying to clean up the mess they’ve created,” said Bennett, a retired historical society archivist who is leading efforts to keep the Centennial building open. The building is set to close because of a funding shortfall, potentially ending public access to hundreds of years of history. Bennett is part of a group of historians and donors suing the historical society over its decision to close the Centennial building. The lawsuit argues the decision happened unexpectedly without public input and violates state code. Bennett said keeping the research facility open is the way to ensure the society’s collection stays publicly accessible. “This is not the solution we’re looking for. This is a continuation of them disguising their actions and behaving in a capricious and unlawful manner,” Bennett said. Bennett said the agreement with the university would only make a portion of the society’s collection accessible. She also expressed concern that transporting the documents could lead to delicate records being damaged or destroyed. “This is a disservice to Iowans and they’re trying to disguise it, pretending that they’re going to make materials available,” Bennett said. “To me this represents disrespecting the public’s wishes and also disregarding the collections and their condition,” she said. The Centennial Building is currently set to close June 30, 2026.
