The bodies of two Iowa National Guard soldiers killed in Syria are set to return to the U.S. this week. The National Guard says soldiers Edgar Torres-Tovar and Nathaniel Howard were ambushed by a lone ISIS gunman during the weekend. Their bodies will be sent to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware first, where President Donald Trump is set to oversee a dignified transfer.
The Iowa City Police Department is renewing a call for help solving a homicide that happened nearly a year ago. 38-year-old Christine Blount was shot around 2:30 in the morning on December 30 of last year. It happened in the 600 block of South Dodge Street. Investigators have looked over hundreds of hours of video, interviewed dozens of witnesses, and served more than 100 search warrants in the case so far. Investigators believe people with crucial information to the case have not come forward.
Two school boards in Eastern Iowa have signed resolutions in the past week asking for increased public school funding… and an end to school vouchers. Decorah’s school board signed a resolution calling for public funds to be used for public schools only, with Keokuk following suit Monday night. The Decorah board voted unanimously for a resolution asking to bring back an income cap for vouchers and to phase out the program within five years along with consistent increases in state funding for schools annually.
Trucks are still being pulled off the sides of I-80 in eastern Iowa after the large number of crashes there on Saturday. Multiple crashes on I-80 west of Iowa City Saturday morning shut down the interstate for several hours in both directions. No one was killed, but dozens of people were injured and taken to the hospital. Lanes in the area will be closed in order to pull crashed cars out of the median.
The second annual “Name a Black Hawk County Snowplow” contest has come to a close, with 200 name submissions. The top three names are: Truck Norris, which took the top spot; in second place was Plow Patrol; and in third place was Plowabunga. A few honorable mentions include Scooper DeJean and Plowasaurus Rex.
