One person was found dead after an apartment fire yesterday in Waterloo. Firefighters were called to the 2900 block of Independence Avenue just before 9 yesterday morning. The name of the victim found inside the apartment has not been released.
The Linn County Board of Supervisors gave approval for an architecture firm to form a plan for a new election services building. The proposed location is across the street from the Jean Oxley Public Service Center on 2nd Street Southwest in Cedar Rapids. That land is already owned by the county. The auditor says the building would provide needed storage for election equipment as well as providing a space that can handle the long lines of early voters. If building plans are approved, the auditor says the hope is to have the building complete by the next presidential election.
Crews say they recovered a body from the Cedar River in Waverly. The body of the man was found in the river near the Waverly Rail Trail bridge yesterday morning. Investigators have ruled out foul play but have not released any other information on the case.
The Iowa State Patrol is looking for the driver who apparently hit and killed a person on Interstate 80. The State Patrol says it is still looking for the driver who apparently hit and killed Nicholas Quintero of Ohio Monday morning about 20 miles east of Grinnell. Witnesses reported seeing someone walking on the roadway just before Troopers found his body.
Statistics show an Iowa’s stretch of Interstate 80 is the most dangerous winter road in America. The blog Samsara cites numbers that show I-80 sees a 625 percent increase in crashes from Fall to Winter. The group blames rapid weather changes and the heavy concentration of trucks and cars on the highway as top reasons for the danger.
A Mason City grandma is doubly thankful today…Sherry Zurn met her twin great-great grandbabies at MercyOne hospital in Mason City. But it’s more than that. The twins–Taytum and Teagan–were born 72 years after she herself gave birth to her twin sons at the same hospital. This birth was a little better planned. 72 years ago, Sherry went to the hospital not knowing she was pregnant with twins.
