Out of Touch

It was striking this week to see multiple members of the administration, including the president himself, warning that we need to back pedal regarding COVID. Another crisis is just around the corner, they say…while also patting themselves on the back for hundreds of millions of vaccinations. This is not only not the time to open back up, they say…rather, governors of states that have opened back up should close down.

They appeal to our sense of patriotism…and if that doesn’t work, of fear…all in an effort to keep control of citizens and their actions.

Coincidentally, just as they warn of the dark winter becoming the dark summer…they’re trying to float requiring us to carry vaccination passports to limit our freedom of movement around the country. History and facts require me to point out that this is being led by Democrats…the same party that tried to fight civil rights legislation in the 1950s and 1960s, legislation that would have put an end to limiting freedom of movement based on race.

But what really is striking is just how out of touch those in D.C. are. Despite their best attempts over the past ten weeks to keep everything tamped down, governors of even blue states see there’s no reason to continue doing that except as a power grab.

Follow the science? Okay, how about even more data showing those states with tougher “keep it closed” requirements…from New York to California to Minnesota…have higher rates of infection than states that are more open.

Hoping to someday open schools? Tell that to the Iowa districts that have not only been in person from the start of the year, but now have even made masks optional.

Talk about a lack of credibility…and therefore a lack of trust which will continue on other issues going forward.
