Iowa’s Preference

It’s always a question if Iowa will hold on to its first-in-the-nation presidential selection status, but assuming we do retain our spot—as I believe we will—it appears Republicans are just fine with everything old is new again.

A Victory Insights poll of 650 Iowa Republicans released this week found that 61 percent say they will support President Trump if he runs. No other Republican even garnered ten percent support among “very likely” caucusgoers in the poll, which was conducted earlier this month.

If Trump decides against trying to pull a Grover Cleveland…it’s a little messy.

Presuming Trump is not in the field, 20 percent said they favored Florida governor Ron DeSantis. Trump’s vice president, Mike Pence, was close behind at 19 percent, and 2016 caucus winner Sen. Ted Cruz garnered 16 percent of support. Again, this is among “very likely” caucusgoers.

“Undecided” or “someone else” combined for the support of some 30 percent in the survey…with names like Ambassador Nikki Haley, Gov. Kristi Noem, Secretary Mike Pompeo and Sen. Mitt Romney represented.

Again, we’re quite a ways away from an early 2024 vote…but this level of support for Trump once again tells us whose party it really is…and how tough it will be for anyone to challenge him. Even tougher since he won’t have to decide for at least a year and a half…making it even harder for unknowns to enter the race that close to caucus night.
