Flags All Around
Last Friday in this segment, I floated an idea for those who have been discouraged about the results of the presidential election and who are depressed that tomorrow is Donald Trump’s last full day in office. We’ve had a nice response to that idea, so I thought I’d share where it came from, and repeat the idea today.
During the presidential campaign, some folks said they were solidly behind Trump but were afraid to put a sign in their yard for fear of vandalism or theft. That alone is a sad commentary. But it was said that you could still tell which households were voting for Trump because they were the ones flying the American flag.
As it became clear that this Trump Administration was coming to a close, I’ve heard from folks who were concerned about the future of the country, and suggested taking down the flag. Others suggested lowering it to half-staff, since we’re in mourning…others suggested flying it upside down, the sign of distress.
That’s what led to my humble suggestion, that tomorrow, we should fly the flag proudly…not only on a flagpole outside, but in every imaginable way. I’ve got a flag necktie I bring out for Independence Day…many folks have flag t-shirts and the like. So let’s wear them tomorrow, as a subtle but strong signal that America is great, and there is great appreciation for president number 45. And let’s spread it electronically, with photos of flags, people wearing images of flags, etc., on social media…tag @kxel1540 and we’ll share it…and use the hashtag “America”…because I dare social media overlords to issue a blanket prohibition on the word “America”.
So, I guess…spread the word. Tomorrow is how we say thanks for the past four years…and celebrate the strength and greatness of our nation, despite what’s about to happen, with the universal symbol of freedom around the world…the American flag.
