Johnson County Jail records indicate ICE placed detainer request for two inmates. Hanier Ramirez-Garcia is accused of creating a fake Facebook profile to use to try to entice a minor for sex in Iowa City. Court documents say the 29-year-old sent a person he believed to be a 15-year-old girl explicit images and requested photos in return last year. Meanwhile, 58-year-old Martin Menjivar is accused of sexually abusing a 5-year-old child three different times last year. Court documents say he’s also accused of picking up a minor, taking nude photos of her and groping her earlier this month.
A convicted felon has been sentenced to two years in federal prison after having a gun and running from Cedar Rapids police. In March 2023, police tried to stop a car they suspected was involved in a recent theft. Brent Robinson was driving and sped away, eventually crashing into a parked car. Robinson had been previously convicted for intimidation with a dangerous weapon and robbery.
Iowa U.S. Senator Charles Grassley said Congress has given President Trump too much unilateral power. Grassley did praise several of Trump’s actions, but was critical of the increasing power of the presidency that President Trump is exercising. Grassley talked to Jones County Farm Bureau members and said he’s unsure if President Trump would look to bail out farmers like he did when tariffs hurt crop prices in 2019. Grassley said he would rather see the federal government increase the use of biofuels to help counter the impact of tariffs.
The Ottumwa school district is increasing safety measures in its school zones. Ottumwa schools and the city is paying $25,000 for the project to allow all schools in the district to get signs and crosswalks installed. District leaders say speeding around elementary schools has been an issue.
Coralville police say they helped capture and return two miniature horses on the loose on soccer fields. The police department shared photos of Buttercup and Butterscotch. Officers found the horses at a youth sports park on Dempster Drive on Saturday. They spent about 45 minutes trying to corral them. Police returned them to their owners.
