It Had Such Promise
Today is September 1st, which meteorologists say is the start of fall…the calendar says it’s a few weeks off, but no matter.
At the start of the year, this had the makings of an summer we would not forget. It turned out to be that way, but for very different reasons.
Memorial Day was as early on the calendar as possible…and Labor Day was as late on the calendar as possible…meaning that using those holidays as the starting and ending points, 2020 would have the longest summer time-wise in years.
Plans were made for a long summer full of events kicking off a decade that some were calling a return to the Roaring 20s…and the once in a lifetime year itself, 20-20. I wasn’t around the last time that happened, in 19-19…and neither were you.
Instead, this already-longer-than-normal summer time-wise turned into an interminably long summer with nothing to do. No events. No socialization. Fear of disease. And then, for so many, a record wind storm with a hard to pronounce name that forever altered the landscape…not just trees that were struck down, never to return…but for some businesses and farming operations, this was the final blow, literally.
So yes, if it seems like this summer drug on and on, if it seems like this summer is longer than normal…you’re right on both counts. The calendar proves it…as do our respective experiences. I don’t like wishing time away, especially as I get closer to one end of the cycle…but this summer, and this year, have been dreadful. We’re all more than ready for something else…but 2020 still has four months left, including a pivotal election.
I’m afraid that may make this summer seem like it passed by in the blink of an eye.
