Job Ads
You may have heard the messages on KXEL recently…we’re looking to ad account executives in both our Waterloo and Cedar Rapids offices. I’m not involved in that, but I think I can guarantee that the conversations between management members are not like this:
“We need to hire a new staff member. Alright…first, let’s make sure it’s a woman. What’s that? What about hiring the best person, you say? Well, we already have a male on staff, so let’s make sure it’s balanced.
“Oh, and given the current political climate, we’d better make sure it’s not just a woman, but a woman of color…preferably if the color is black, or even better, mixed race but both races being of color. What? Oh, there you go again, with that ‘what about hiring the best person’ stuff.
“The job description says previous experience is not necessary, but is a plus. There’s nothing that says that previous experience had to be successful, or that the person had any talent at it…just so long as it’s previous experience.
Once again, I am confident that’s not how we’re hiring our future account executives. But it is exactly how the Democrats came up with their choice for vice president…through check boxes and quotas. I’m not disparaging the person who got the job…I’m just going with what the bosses–in this case, the presidential nominee and interest groups–said publicly, placing qualifications on the job that had to do with characteristics of birth, as opposed to straight talent and skill.
Maybe those who didn’t check the boxes on the vice presidential nominee search could apply for a position with KXEL. We don’t have such limits here.
