Finding Time For It All

A recent survey of more than 1,000 office professionals in the U.S. suggests that while summer is typically vacation time…this summer is hardly typical.

We’ve talked before about the fact that we in this country are pretty bad when it comes to taking all our vacation time, certainly when compared to those in other countries. Now, in the wake of COVID-19, it’s apparently even worse.

The survey showed that 28 percent plan to take less time off this summer than last. That could be because many spent a lot of time at home and away from a worksite already this year, and they almost welcome a more normal schedule.

But more than a third, 37 percent, say they’re actually saving vacation time for later in the year, in hopes of being able to travel more freely. We’ll see about that.

A fair number of respondents, 14 percent, say they have too much on their plate right now to use vacation time…getting back in the work flow and getting caught up post-COVID is taking some time.

Nearly a quarter, 22 percent, say they’d like to take a vacation, but are cutting spending on such things due to the pandemic.

But in one bright spot of self-awareness, a full 20 percent say they’ll take vacation days, not for leisure travel, but for mental health.

Something a lot of us can relate to.
