Taxes and Dads
You can use numbers and statistics to tell whatever story you want, so take the ones I’m about to give to you with a grain of salt.
The personal finance website WalletHub has been at work again with various statistics, one of which shows that Iowa is among the least dependent states in the country on the federal government.
In other words, we roll our own boat pretty well.
For example, Iowa ranks 47th in the country in terms of federal funding as a share of state revenue. Similarly, and therefore not surprisingly, we ranked 47th in the nation in the share of federal jobs in our state.
But we tend to get a good return on our investment from paying federal taxes. We are right in the middle, 26th, in terms of return back from the government for the taxes we pay.
Now on to Dad since Father’s Day is this Sunday. Life as a working dad in Iowa is pretty good; for example, Iowa ranks 15th in the country in the survey in terms of male life expectancy, meaning only 14 other states have a longer life expectancy for men.
Childcare costs are pretty reasonable here. We ranked 13th in the country in terms of low-cost.
And the unemployment rate for dads with children younger than age 18? No one does better. The lowest unemployment rate for dads in the country is here in Iowa.
Obviously if you are a dad without a job, or if you think you are paying too much for childcare, these national numbers may not mean much to you. But it does give us at least some sense of how we rank compared with our neighbors from coast to coast.News/Talk 1540 KXEL · Iowa Politics — Wed. Jun. 17, 2020
