Mask It Up

What I’m about to tell you isn’t an original idea, I’ve heard others make the comment this week, but it bears repeating.

In the wake of all the protests across America, the concept of social distancing and wearing a mask in public has sort of gone out the door. Yes, you do see some protesters wearing masks, but as the evening goes on, some mask-wearers have them for other reasons…handier when looting to not be identified.

For three months, we’ve heard about wearing masks, keeping at least six feet apart, etc. There’s no exception for when one is engaging in social justice protests.

So within two weeks, then, if all we’ve heard is correct…there should be a sharp rise in the number of cases of COVID-19 in areas where there have been these gatherings.

And if not…then maybe all the concern about social distancing and mask wearing was well-intentioned advice, but not necessary.

Both can’t happen…we can’t have all this interaction and not have a spike, but then insist folks wear masks when they pass each other in an office hallway.

My personal preference is that there’s no COVID-19 outbreak, because that’s better for public health…and it might also allow us to have conversations with people and actually see them talking.News/Talk 1540 KXEL · Iowa Politics — Thu. Jun. 04, 2020
