Fall Ballot

Yesterday was the Iowa Primary, and while we could have predicted this based on polling in advance, we now have official word.

There are five so-called federal races on the Iowa ballot…one for U.S. Senate, and four for the U.S. House.

Republicans and Democrats will be fielding a total of 10 candidates in those races…five races, two candidates per race.

And of the 10…7 will be women.

It’s a guarantee that Iowa’s next U.S. Senator will be a woman, whether Sen. Joni Ernst or Theresa Greenfield wins.

Same in Iowa’s first congressional district…and in the second…where Abby Finkenauer and Ashley Hinson compete in NE Iowa, and Rita Hart and Marianette Miller-Meeks in SE Iowa.

In SW Iowa, in the third district, it’s a rematch of two years ago, with incumbent Cindy Axne taking on former congressman David Young…so a 50-50 chance there.

The only guarantee that a male will win is in the fourth district…Randy Feenstra will face J.D. Scholten.

It was only two years ago that Iowa elected its first female governor, and first female members of the U.S. House. Clearly, the ballot looks far different these days than it did not long ago.
