Masking Security

I promise, I won’t use this time to report back about every time I go to the store…although it may seem like it since I try to limit any such trips.

While at a store Sunday morning, one founded by the Walton family, I noted their attempts to have traffic flow in one direction down and aisle, and they are clearly marked by green arrows, or red stop signs, pasted on the floor at the ends of the aisle.

Invariably, every person I encountered who didn’t follow those rules…was wearing a face mask.

Granted, some of them looked quite out of place…like they hadn’t been to a store in years, but became their family’s delegate. So I do expect a bit of wandering around.

But to be literally standing on the sign, with the cart and the human aimed the wrong way…each one, wearing the mask of invincibility.

This has nothing to do with masks themselves. Wear them, don’t wear them…it should be your choice as a customer.

But the number of people who act like putting a mask on insulates them from everything, including the duty to be careful when encountering another person, is a bit concerning…and gives the wearer a false sense of security.

So the moral of the story is that if you are wearing a mask, don’t fall for the fiction that you are now safe and you don’t have to pay attention to your surroundings. The secondary moral is that people with masks usually don’t understand that, so the rest of us have to watch out for them, too.
