Only Her Hairdresser Knows For Sure
Early on during the pandemic, the mayor of Chicago ordered barber shops and beauty salons to be closed. Not long after, she was seen at a news conference with a fresh hairdo. When asked about it, she justified the private against-the-rules appointment with her hairdresser because she was the public face of Chicago and needed to look good. You can imagine the public, and media, response to that.
Iowa has its first-ever female governor in Kim Reynolds, which means her husband Kevin is the first “first gentleman”. Some of the duties of past first ladies involved planning events at Terrace Hill, the governor’s mansion…but the couple is obviously rewriting the rule book and lots of things fall under the job description “other duties as assigned”.
Here’s one that probably hadn’t been anticipated. According to photos from the governor’s own Twitter account, the First Gentleman assisted the Governor this past weekend by applying hair dye to touch up her roots and highlights. The kids say, “pictures or it didn’t happen”…well, there are pictures, four of them in fact, and there he is with dye brush in hand, while she is seated in a chair with an old towel draped over her shoulders.
Some might say that’s a little too much “behind the scenes”, while cynics would say it was a stunt and she really snuck someone in the back door just as the Chicago mayor did. Certainly no evidence of that. And in this time of uncertainty, knowing that the first family was handling routine chores much like the rest of us on a Sunday morning no doubt struck a responsive chord. Although it may have added some items to other husbands’ to-do lists that might cause for new family stress.
