The People Are Speaking
I filled in for Todd Starnes hosting his national program yesterday, and if the callers to that show are any indication, they expect the U.S. Senate to get to work right away in January and confirm each and every one of Donald Trump’s nominees for high-level government positions.
Now these are folks who follow the news closely and are aware of what’s going on. But to a person, there was support for each of Trump’s selections. One even called out a Newsmax host for not being fully on board with one of the nominees.
Their rationale was that citizens elected Donald Trump to a nearly unprecedented second, non-consecutive term and that he should have the team around him he wants. In other words, they gave him a pass on specifics, trusting that he knew best–which is why they elected him.
That’s a lot of political capital Trump has in the bank. That could be very important in moving an agenda forward and keeping stray senators or representatives in line.
My fear is that even Trump can only do so much, so fast…and in our “what have you done for me lately” society, people’s short attention spans may lead to unrealistic expectations and a short post-inaugural honeymoon.
But that’s for another day. For now, citizens are not shy about again giving Trump their proxy and urging others they have elected to do the same.
After November 5th, we said “the people have spoken”…it appears “the people are still speaking” and rather loudly. Office holders ignore that at their own electoral peril.
