One person is dead after a house fire in Waterloo. Waterloo Fire Rescue says it found the person in the Norris Court home, and is now working with the medical examiner’s office to help determine a cause of death. The battalion chief says the house was badly damaged; part of the floor collapsed on the main level. The Fire Marshal has not yet said what caused this fire.
Jurors heard about the gunshot wounds and saw the bullet casing found at the scene of a 2021 Iowa City murder. Renard Winfield of Gary, Indiana is charged with 1st Degree Murder in the shooting death of Tommy Curry in April 2021. Prosecutors claim the two started talking on a dating website. Curry was led to believe he was talking with a woman. Prosecutors claim Winfield shot Curry as revenge. A crime scene technician testified and identified several bullet shells at the scene that they say matched the caliber of a gun Winfield had in his possession that year. Testimony continues today.
Iowa Republican U.S. Senator Joni Ernst says she’s not ready to support President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary. Pete Hegseth faces allegations of sexual misconduct, alcohol abuse and mismanagement of finances. He’s denied the allegations. Ernst, who is a combat veteran and a sexual assault survivor, was on a growing list of candidates under consideration to replace Hegseth.
A group that lobbies for tax cuts wants Governor Kim Reynolds to make changes to the state’s corporate tax rate. The Iowa Taxpayers Association says the state’s corporate income tax rate is in the middle of the pack compared to surrounding states. It argues changes to the corporate tax rate would make the state much more competitive. The Revenue Estimating Conference predicts the state will bring in $200 million less in revenue next year than it is currently spending due to tax cuts.
The demand for graduate-level education is increasing, which could lead to more students seeking master’s degrees in the coming years. This year, the University of Iowa reported a total of 300 students in their U2G, or undergraduate to graduate program. It allows students to get their bachelor’s and master’s in five years. This is the largest number of people enrolled since the program’s inception.
