Playing Out The String
I’ve heard lots of folks complaining that the Democrats in Washington are aggressively doing all manner of things while they still can—while they still have control over some budgets, while they still have the White House, while they still control the Senate.
Well, what did you expect them to do? If they simply went home, there’d be complaints that they failed to work until the end. And let’s be honest…both parties do the same thing, given the chance.
So if Joe Biden thinks Donald Trump will limit U.S. help to Ukraine, why wouldn’t he load them up now, right down to forgiving loans that most of us figured would never be paid anyway? If Chuck Schumer thinks the next Administration will appoint judges he doesn’t like, why wouldn’t he act now to approve as many as he can at every level? If Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo thinks money earmarked for certain favorite projects would be clawed back—the technical phrase, seriously—when a new department head takes over, why wouldn’t she sign off on as many distribution orders as possible to get the money out the door?
I know, will of the people…the people just voted for change. But just like we know that the popular vote doesn’t matter for president since we keep score by the electoral college, we also know that terms of office run for a certain period of time, and slacking off on the last two months of a term isn’t appropriate.
But as always, where you stand depends on where you sit.
