On Monday U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) released the Senate Democrats’ 2024 Farm Bill text.
The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) issued the following statement in a press release in response to the unveiling of the text of the Senate Democrats’ bill.
“Though America’s pork producers appreciate Chairwoman Stabenow’s efforts to publish Farm Bill text, this is simply not a viable bill, as it fails to provide a solution to California Prop. 12,” said NPPC President Lori Stevermer, a pork producer from Easton, Minn. “Pork producers have continually spoken up about the negative impacts of this issue, and it is a shame these conversations were disregarded.”
On Tuesday United States Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) was asked during his weekly conference call with broadcasters and reporters about the importance of a federal solution to California’s Prop 12.
Since the passage of California’s Prop 12, several members of Congress and ag stakeholder groups have voiced concerns about similar legislation being passed at the state level that affects how animals are raised nationwide. Grassley says that there were similar state level referendums on the ballot during the November elections.
Grassley says that both houses of Congress need to address Prop 12 within the text of the farm bill in 2025.
Senator Grassley made his comments on Tuesday morning during his weekly ag conference call with farm broadcasters and reporters.
