Striking Cargill workers have reached a deal with company on a new contract to end a month-long strike. The union announced the deal, saying it’s a win-win for both sides but didn’t give specifics. The workers were asking for pay increases and better working conditions. Just last week, the company said it would be cutting off health care for the striking workers. Cargill issued a statement saying it’s pleased to have its employees back to work to help the company continue to safely service their customers.

 

Starting today, you can apply for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The goal is to help Americans find health care plans that fit their budgets. During open enrollment, you’re able to sign up, renew, and change your health plan. Ryan Fowler with Fowler Financial Solutions says by talking with an insurance agent, you’re able to pick out a plan that’s right and affordable for you. If you want your coverage to start on New Year’s Day, you need to enroll by December 15. The absolute final day to enroll for 2025 is January 15, for coverage starting February 1.

 

Jury selection is underway in the trial for a man charged with murdering a Marion woman. McKinley Louisma is charged with first degree murder and kidnapping in the death of 20-year-old Melody Hoffman. Her body was found near Lily Lake in Amana in February. Days before the murder, police say Louisma was seen with two other men buying gloves and machetes at a Cedar Rapids Walmart. Two other men have also been charged in connection with Hoffman’s death.

 

A business coming to Cedar Rapids aims to address gaps in food access in an underserved neighborhood after Hy-Vee closed earlier this year. Hornbill Asian Market will lease a new space at 1445 First Avenue Southeast. It says it will have fresh produce, Asian groceries, and specialty foods. That area became a food desert when Hy-Vee closed its First Avenue store in Cedar Rapids in May. It is just a block away from where this new store will be.
