Iowa Politics with Jeff Stein — Mon. Oct. 07, 2024

Here’s One Scenario

We’re a month away from the election, and there’s plenty to focus on regarding candidates, policy, etc.

But for just a moment, let’s think about one possible scenario and its ramifications…what if Donald Trump is elected president, but Democrats gain majorities in both houses of Congress?

That’s not a farfetched possibility. Trump is on pace to secure the needed electoral votes, based on a preponderance of polls in individual states.

The U.S. Senate currently has 49 Republicans and 47 Democrats…but there are 4 Independents who caucus with the Democrats, giving them a majority. The GOP had high hopes for the Senate, but are way behind in the polls in some states they targeted for pickup, including Arizona, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.

Then there’s the U.S. House…with 220 Republicans, 212 Democrats, and 3 vacancies. That’s a thin majority, and one which has failed to hold together on much. With all those seats up, anything can happen. For example, Iowa has four representatives, all Republicans…but based on current polling, Democrats could easily pick up two of the four in November–that alone would leave the GOP with only a 1 seat majority.

So assume Trump is president and both the House and Senate are in Democrat hands. How soon do you think it would be before the first Articles of Impeachment are filed? My bet is that they’d be filed while Trump is delivering his inauguration speech.

You may say “so what?”–they’d be bogus Articles and besides, he survived two past impeachments. Sure, but that was with a Republican Senate. Given the Democrats ability to vote as a bloc, it’s not hard to imagine impeachment by Groundhog Day and removal from office before the cherry blossoms bloom.

That would leave us with President J.D. Vance–in reality, Democrats might find it easier to deal with Trump.

That’s just one scenario of life post-November 5th. Another one tomorrow.
