The Happy Joes Pizza locations in Hiawatha and North Liberty are closed–and workers say they got no notice and no pay. General Manager Teagan Englert says owner Gabe Bark called her to the store on September 5 and told her the business hadn’t been doing well for eight months and would be shutting down immediately. Englert says as of today, she and all her employees haven’t been paid. Bark says he hasn’t been paid either.

People from around the world are in eastern Iowa, learning about how Midwest communities stay connected. It’s part of the Connecting Communities in the Americas Gathering, an annual event centered on exchanging ideas on how to solve different issues. The session, held in Dubuque, is a chance to show off Iowa, and create partnerships that could foster economic development opportunities in the future.

The Cedar Valley Humane Society in Cedar Rapids is asking for help after a significant animal rescue Monday night. In a post on social media, the organization said it was called by law enforcement to pick up 4 dogs and 18 cats. The animals were all covered in fleas, and one picture shows a dog with exposed skin and visible ribs. This seizure puts the humane society over capacity. It says it’s continuing to get phone calls and emails, but can’t accept any more owner surrenders. The Humane Society is asking people to adopt, or if that’s not possible, to donate to help the shelter provide for the pets in its care.

An Iowa department is blasting a state auditor’s report that found hundreds of Iowa nursing homes are falling short when it comes to inspections. In a statement, the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing said 99% of nursing homes in Iowa are within the required inspection interval and the remaining 1% will be completed before the end of this month. The Department of Inspections says the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services will release its own report later this year.
