An attempted murder suspect who fled the country is in the process of returning to Iowa. Ali Younes was charged with attempted murder, robbery and theft after police say he robbed and strangled someone on the University of Iowa’s campus in April 2022. Then, in May 2023, he removed his GPS device and boarded a flight to Jordan. Both his parents were convicted and sentenced for helping him flee the country. Younes landed in Chicago Tuesday and is being held pending a hearing on his extradition to Iowa.
A Cedar Rapids man who is already serving a 50 year sentence could receive another 50 year sentence after taking a plea deal. Kazius Childress pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death of Kavon Johnson. Childress admitted he shot and killed Johnson in January of 2022 at Cedar Valley Park on Blakely Boulevard. His sentencing is set for late October. Childress is already in prison for the killing of Cordell Lewis during a robbery, also in January of 2022.
A federal judge has ruled a Waterloo Police Officer who shot and killed a man in 2021 may have violated the man’s rights but is immune from federal prosecution. Officer Ken Schaaf shot and killed Brent Boggess after a police chase in November 2021. Police say Boggess led them on a chase in a neighborhood before police blocked him in an alley near his home. After a back-and-forth with police, Boggess drove his car into a police cruiser. That’s when Schaaf shot and killed him. The judge remanded the case to District Court.
The Dubuque Regional Airport is set to have commercial air service again. Dubuque Mayor Brad Cavanagh announced direct air service to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. Those flights will be operated by Denver Air Connections, and run every day sometime in the mid-afternoon. Flights are scheduled to begin on November 4.
A 13-year-old Independence student is charged with “threat of terrorism” after the police department says he expressed a desire to “shoot up the school”. The Independence Police Department says two students were identified in a post on social media. It included that caption describing a desire to commit a school shooting. They were booked into the Buchanan County Jail with one, not both, of the children facing charges.
