Iowa Politics with Jeff Stein — Mon. Jun. 24, 2024

Saturday Is The Day
I’m referring to the day of the annual KXEL summer picnic, free and open to all. We’re calling it “IowaFest” and featuring a host of things that are distinctly Iowa.
For example, it’s at the historic National Cattle Congress grounds in Waterloo, inside the air-conditioned Pavilion building…so weather will not be a factor.
The folks from Tyson Fresh Meats in Waterloo will be serving Iowa pork sandwiches…and if you like a little sauce with your sandwich, we’ll have Iowa-based Cookies barbecue sauce on hand.
Hy-Vee is working with us on the side dishes for the picnic…including Iowa corn, and baked beans with just the right amount of Iowa bacon for flavor. Since Iowa and Idaho are often confused by folks who don’t know better, there will be potato salad. Cole slaw, too…we’re still working on the Iowa angle for that, to be honest.
And the Butler County Dairy Producers will have their popular milk shake machine serving up tasty Iowa dairy treats. We’ll have representation from the Iowa soybean industry, too.
Our non-Iowa import for the day is our special guest, radio host and author Todd Starnes who will be flying up from Memphis in the wake of the first presidential debate Thursday…so you can be sure he’ll have thoughts to share with you on that at the picnic. I’ll hold an on-stage conversation with Todd as folks are enjoying lunch, and he’ll speak from the stage later in the day. You can also pick up a copy of Todd’s top-selling book, “Twilight’s Last Gleaming,” as well. We’ll have other speakers on the stage, too.
And in the best of Iowa traditions of thriftiness…it’s free. But to make sure we have enough food, go and reserve your tickets now at kxel.com/iowafest. You won’t need a ticket to get in, it’s just so we can plan…as I said, everyone is welcome to join in food, friends, and fellowship.
That’s another good Iowa tradition. We’ll see you on Saturday.
