ORIENT, Iowa (WOI/KCRG) – The Orient-Macksburg School board voted this week to dissolve the district after the next school year, citing years worth of financial shortfalls, low enrollment and staffing issues. The district is made up of two schools and about 160 students. Leaders say the district’s spending authority is decreasing, and emergency relief funds from the pandemic will run out this year. The school board considered reorganizing the district into portions and merging with other districts. But ultimately, it decided dissolving the whole thing and asking nearby districts to take in students was the best option. The change means teachers employed by the district will be forced to find another school to work at, or find new employment entirely. It’s not clear where the students will go to school. The closest districts that could take students include Nodaway Valley, Creston, and Winterset. While the board approved the decision, voters will still have the final say with a ballot measure in a special election. It’s the first Iowa district to close in nearly a decade.
