CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Leaders with MercyOne say they’re still dealing with phone outage issues days after a water line break in Des Moines caused a statewide outage for landlines calls to 911 and some hospitals. It happened on Thursday morning. Lumen, the parent company of phone and internet provider CenturyLink, confirmed a water pipe bursting in Des Moines was behind the outages. But leaders with Lumen said techs have been working to fix the service disruption. In an update on Monday, MercyOne said it is still experiencing inconsistencies from the Lumen switching station, but it is providing alternative communications methods while it waits for full service restoration. Patients can schedule appointments online or call 911 from a cellphone in the event of an emergency.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A Cedar Rapids man will spend 50 years in prison for the murder of his mother. A Linn County judge ruled George Deason was guilty of second-degree murder back in March of this year. This case goes back to July 2020 when officers responded to a home on 18th Avenue Southwest for a reported assault. A woman called first responders after finding her mother, 71-year-old Elsie Deason, severely beaten. Police said George Deason attacked his mother with a weapon called slapjack, a whip-like weapon. Elsie Deason suffered a traumatic brain injury and died about three weeks later. Deason also pleaded guilty to Assault and Interference with Official Acts charges in November of last year. Those charges come with six years of prison time, but his sentences will be served at the same time. Deason is eligible for parole, but he must complete 70% percent of that sentence before he can become eligible.
