DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – A former Dubuque priest accused of sexual abuse while he was serving with the Archdiocese of Dubuque in the 1980′s was arrested in Florida on Wednesday. Father Leo Patrick Riley, 68, was charged on Wednesday with five counts of second degree sexual abuse. Dubuque police said they coordinated with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in Florida to make the arrest. He’s being held in jail in Florida awaiting extradition. Four people reported being sexually abused by Father Riley, who currently works in Port Charlotte, Florida. Riley was the associate pastor of Resurrection Parish in Dubuque from 1984-1986. All the victims were grade school-aged, altar boys at the time of the alleged abuse, according to police. Riley moved to the Diocese of Venice, Florida in 2002 to be closer to his parents, and became a priest there in 2005.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa City Animal Services says it is investigating after receiving a report of a dog bite on Wednesday morning. Investigators said it happened in the 1300 block of Teg Drive at around 9:30 a.m. Officials described the dog as being medium to large in size, with a short coat, a brown body and a black face. The dog that allegedly attacked the victim was walking with a second dog, that was described as having a medium build and a black coat. Investigators said an older white man was walking the dogs, which were on leash at the time of the incident. Iowa City Animal Services is looking for information regarding the dog’s rabies vaccination status. BUCHANAN COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two separate accidents that both resulted in injuries on Tuesday. The first crash happened at 7:20 a.m. Tuesday in the 1000-block of 120th Street near Fairbank. The sheriff’s office says a 66-year-old woman from Waterloo was driving a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan when she lost control of the vehicle. The van went into a ditch before coming to a rest in a field. The driver was taken to Allen Hospital in Waterloo for minor injuries. The second crash happened at 1:55 p.m. Tuesday in the 2500-block of Buffalo Creek Blvd near Winthrop. The sheriff’s office says an 89-year-old man from Coggon was operating a 2014 BMW motorcycle when it collided with a deer that had run onto the road. The man was taken to UIHC in Iowa City for unspecified injuries. He is expected to recover.
BURLINGTON, Iowa (KCRG) – People in southeast Iowa are being urged to avoid a local creek after hundreds of gallons of fertilizer spilled. A 700-gallon plastic tank with ammonium phosphate fell off a truck in Burlington. The driver stopped, but soon left the scene. An unknown amount of fertilizer spilled onto the street and into a storm sewer which goes into Hawkeye Creek. DNR staff have found contamination in the creek, and are working to address any impacts before the fertilizer gets to the Mississippi River. No dead fish have been found.
